About Insoshi

Insoshi aims to be the best open-source social networking platform. We're proud to be a Y Combinator company.

Developer community

This site is for our developer community and is powered by Insoshi. So we are "eating our own dogfood", as the saying goes. Features, enhancements and fixes are driven not only by the feedback from the developers on the site, but also through their use of it! (By the way, if you don't want to join the developer site but still want to "kick the tires" and try out the Insoshi platform, take a look at the Insoshi demo site.) We currently have a rudimentary roadmap, and will provide more details soon.

Site guidelines

How should members of the Insoshi community treat each other? Our motto is simple: "Be nice." (Or, as Google might put it, "Don't be not nice.") When sending messages, making blog or forum posts, or leaving wall comments, please use a considerate and civil tone. And when giving feedback on Insoshi itself, be mindful of the difference between "You guys suck! I can't believe you don't have X, Y, and Z!" and "You guys rock! Have you thought about adding X, Y, and Z?" (In case you're wondering, we prefer the latter. :-)

License

<p>As noted in the <a href="http://github.com/insoshi/insoshi/tree/master/LICENSE"><tt>LICENSE</tt></a> file that comes with the source code, Insoshi is available under the <a href="http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/agpl-3.0.html">GNU Affero General Public License</a> (or AGPL for short)&mdash;basically, the <a href="http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html">GNU GPL</a> for web applications. The AGPL requires that modifications to the Insoshi code base also be released under the AGPL. This is essentially the same requirement as the GNU GPL, which is used by many of the most popular open-source projects, including Linux and MySQL. (Due to an unfortunate loophole, the GPL is virtually useless for web applications, since making an application available over the web doesn't count as "distribution". The AGPL closes that loophole.)</p>

We are working on offering a commercial license for users of Insoshi who do not want to be bound by the terms of the AGPL. (This is the same basic dual-license model pioneered by MySQL.) Please get it touch with us if you are interested in obtaining a commercial license.
